Masonry, Belgian Block & Stonework

Our Professional Mason Crew Will Design and Install Your Belgian Block, Borders, Aprons, Inlays, Paving Stones, Concrete or Bluestone

Reitman Sealcoating, Inc. does masonry and stonework alongside our blacktop paving, so your driveway, its borders and its walkways are planned and built as one job by one company. We work across Nassau and Suffolk counties from our yard in Huntington Station. Bob Reitman has president and founder, started in the trade in 1977 and has 49 years of paving and sealcoating experience, and we have served more than 14,000 Long Island customers.

Call (631) 549-5455 or request a free written quote. If you are having a driveway paved, ask us to price the stonework at the same visit.

Masonry and Stonework We Install

  • Belgian block borders and curbing. Rows of cut granite block along the edges of a driveway. They give blacktop a finished, framed look, and they hold the edge of the pavement so it does not crumble where tires run off the side.
  • Driveway aprons. The apron is the section where your driveway meets the street. It takes the most abuse from turning cars, plows and delivery trucks, and a Belgian block or paving stone apron is the first thing people see from the road.
  • Inlays and accents. Bands, patterns and accent strips of block or paving stone set into or across a blacktop driveway.
  • Paving stones. Walkways, patios, aprons and parking courts built from interlocking paving stones.
  • Concrete. Walkways, pads and other concrete work that ties into your driveway.
  • Bluestone. Natural bluestone for walkways, steps and entries.

Why Combine Stonework With a New Driveway

Borders and aprons are built before the blacktop goes down, and the asphalt is then paved tight against them. Doing both as one job means the heights, the drainage and the edges are planned together, the finished surfaces meet flush, and the site is only torn up once. Adding a border to an existing driveway can be done, but it means cutting back pavement that is already in place.

A border also protects your investment. The edge is the weakest part of any blacktop driveway, because there is nothing beside it to support it. A solid edge of stone gives the pavement something to push against, which helps stop the cracking and crumbling that starts at the sides and works its way in.

See Blacktop Paving for how we build the driveway itself.

Belgian Block on Long Island

Belgian block is cut granite, and granite stands up to the things that are hardest on Long Island driveways: freezing and thawing, road salt, and plow blades. It does not rot or fade, and it does not need sealing. It can be laid in single or double rows, flat with the pavement or raised as a curb.

What Affects the Cost of Masonry Work

We price each job after seeing it, and the quote is free and in writing. The price depends on:

  • Material. Belgian block, paving stones, concrete and bluestone are priced differently.
  • Length and area. The running length of a border, or the square footage of an apron, walkway or patio.
  • Pattern. Single or double rows, raised curbing, curves and inlay patterns take more time than straight runs.
  • Site preparation. Removal of old material, excavation and grading.
  • Combining work. Stonework priced and built together with a paving job costs less than two separate projects.

Masonry and Belgian Block Questions

What is Belgian block?

Belgian block is cut granite stone, laid in rows to form driveway borders, curbing and aprons. It is extremely durable, it handles freezing weather, salt and plows, and it gives a blacktop driveway a finished edge.

What is a driveway apron?

The apron is the section of driveway where it meets the street. It takes the most wear from turning cars, plows and trucks, so many homeowners finish it in Belgian block or paving stones for both strength and appearance.

Can you add a Belgian block border to my existing driveway?

Yes, it can be done, but it means cutting back pavement that is already in place. The best time to add borders or an apron is when the driveway is being paved, because the stone goes in first and the blacktop is paved tight against it.

Does a border help my driveway last longer?

Yes. The edge is the weakest part of a blacktop driveway because nothing supports it from the side. A stone border holds the edge of the pavement and helps stop the cracking and crumbling that starts at the sides.
